Trillium on ebay....any good sources??

Hi, I was thinking about buying a bunch of different Trillium for my shade garden and it seems that on ebay they practically give them away compared to catalogues. I'm wondering if anyone has bought from any of the sellers there and can recommend one that sends nice big rhizomes that transplant well?? Thanks for any help you can give :o) Dan

Dear Bluebonsai,

I'd be wary of anything that you don't know the provenance of. Some people may be digging this off county land or off private land without permission.

The only way I got mine was from (with permission first from the owner) was from a small parcel of land that is zoned for commercial development and will be bullzozed when it's sold.

This is why - from a reputable nursery - it's very expensive. It takes a lot of time develop a sustainable colony from which you can harvest roots for sale.

I think you are better off getting involved with a group that assists with native plant rescues than purchasing plants off of ebay.

Dan....
Here's a source of Trilliums, from an expert at propagating and cultivating them.
Don Jacobs at: ecogardens@bellsouth.net
He grows almost all of the species in the world, plus many selected oddities. (Not the 2 Endangered Species)
Not as cheap as the ebay sellers, I'm sure, but you can be assured that none of his are wild collected,

Thanks, I'm not sure you need to a priori assume that ebay sellers are digging them out of the ground, but perhaps they are.

I know that Munchkin nursery sells some as well. I've actually sold him some of my things and he is a great guy so maybe I can pony up the coin to buy some from him :o) Dan
