RE: Hi questions on buying woodland plants

I buy most of my native's from a small nursery in Decatur, GA. He propagates all of the one's he sells- none are wild collected. He may have a limited selection of Lady Slippers, because many species will not survive in the South. But he has almost all of the Trillium species, including some unusual colors and leaf patterns and has written a book about them. Send him a list of your wants at: ecogardens@bellsouth.net(Don Jacobs) and he can advise what is available and prices.

RE: Hi questions on buying woodland plants

Hope nobody minds my mentioning that I tend to have better luck when I buy from nurseries closer in climate to where I live. The plants seem less likely to survive, especially if they're from someplace warmer than my area. Not sure if it applies to these plants, but I would think it would.

Unfortunately I don't have sources for these too close to where you are, but you might check native plant nurseries on GardenWatchdog and/or nurseries in your area. If you do this, you'll also want to check the ratings before you order. I had one site in Minnesota in my browser favorites. They don't have lady slipper, I've never used them, and they're not rated on Garden Watchdog. Sorry, but that's the best I seem to have to offer as an alternative. It's http://www.morningskygreenery.com. I think even something a bit more northern might work. Maybe somebody out there knows of some more northern sources.

Pinetree Garden Seeds in New Gloucester has a few woodland natives including trillium, hepatica and a few others. The prices aren't bad either. I ordered from them last year and the plants were dormant when they arrived. I saved my receipt in the event that they don't come back this spring.
