Xone 5 Plant Suggestions

Hi All:

I am looking for some zone 5 suggestions. The back far corner of my lot is shaded from a large pine (no branches until 8 feet above ground), a Beech tree and an apple tree. Planting would primarily be under the pine canopy. It does get some dappled sun, but not much. I do have a six foot fence that I would love to grow a vine over. I plan on putting 2 deck chairs out there so that I can sit under the tree and out of the sun. All in all it ends up being about an 18 x 18 foot area. I have hostas readily available, orange ditch daylilies I thought might make it on the fringes. I can't have any poisonous plants as I have 2 dogs who are much to curious and love to nibble everything. Your thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Skip the orange ditch lilies. They are invasive and once established, they are impossible to eradicate. There are so much better daylilies. Astilbes and epimediums are a natural for an area like that and they go well with hostas.

For a shade tolerant vine, you could try akebia quinata. It's perfectly hardy in zone 5 and fast growing. I have been told that it travels a bit, though I did not have that problem with mine. Mine was, however, bordered on two sides by asphalt. Akebia has unflashy flowers and only sets fruit if pollinated by an unrelated plant. You could also try a climbing hydrangea, but these take several years to establish and so require some patience. Tiarella and phlox divaricata make nice groundcovers under trees. Mertensia would do well there, too, as would dicentra, though these go dormant in summer.

For shade under trees you might also consider false solomon seal (the variegated one is nice), arisaema, hellebores, mayapples (which I think are hardy in zone 5)or ferns. For some variety, have a look at eleutherococcus sieboldianus 'Variegata', a striking, variegated shrub (no flowers) that does well in dry shade. I had one in sone 5 and loved it.

Compost the orange ditch lilies!
