Hi HotHouseHen, you are not posting a picture, you are simply referencing it (you have them stored elsewhere).

Anyway, like many of us, I think you have a mixture of spaces. The area under the trees seems suitably "woodland". I'm sure when those trees leaf out it gets pretty shady, right?

The area up by the house, with that lovely patio, looks sunny. Is it? That would be a great place for sun loving shrubs and perennials.

The trees do create a mostly shaded area. They are oak, hickory, dogwood, and some others that I can't name because I am not a good tree identifier.
The area in front of my house(grassier part) is mostly sun, with the area right next to it (defined by the stone path) is only part-sun.
I'm glad to hear that other people have a "mixture" of yard types, because I am really trying to figure out my style. I have new perennials and annuals to plant this weekend so that should add some new life to the area.

Looks like a woodland to me -- not a very big woodland, but (unless it's actually a playground) you should treat it like one. I've just got an acre, but it's plenty to plant a vegetable garden and perennial beds closer to the house and to encourage or plant wood-loving things like jack-in-the-pulpit, mayapple, windflower (anemone canadensis), virginia bluebells and others in the woods. Check this forum and the native plants forum as well for ideas.
