My approach in woodland gardening is to allow whatever comes up live. I have a few enemies that I attack with a vengeance (poison ivy, multifora rose, jap.honeysuckle) but for the most part, I let things grow and wait to see what comes up. Allow nature to do its own thing as long as it isn't invasive or makes me itch. You never know what beautiful plants will come up.

Good advice. My benign neglect has given me pink lady slippers, Solomon seal, Joe pye, NY iron weed, cardinal flowers,butterfly weed,Rhexia to name just a few neat things, not to mention common asters that I personally love.

Of course, I have to pull out some things, especially cherry tree seedlings, which pop up in both sun and shade. I like that tree, but you can have too much of a good thing.
