Pruning Mountain Laurel ??

Hi, Im new to this forum but have a question. I just bought a house with 3 acres, about 2 wooded. The former owner decided to make what feels like a football size back yard where everything but grass is growing. Looks like he bulldozed the trees leaving many small ones just toppled over into other trees with up turned roots. Messy.

Anyways there are a lot of mountail laurel everywhere. He must have cut out some of the Laurel exposing parts that haven't seen sun in years. They are very tall with only small canopies and much dead branches below. My question is can I trim away those dead branch without harming the laurel? I was thinking mostly just what I see from the house and leaving what's in the woods alone.

I did one big bush and it looks kind of neat exposing a lot of twisted gnarly branches and it let some sunlight in. I'm assuming like rhodies they may sprout along the branches.

I plan on replanting some native trees back into the yard. That or goalposts.

Thanks,

Donna mae
