What caused this (Florida Maple Tree)?

Looks like something bored into it. The tree has been declining ever since, so I finally, after much debate, took it out yesterday. The side of the tree was all cracked and I'd like to make sure my other Maple doesn't get this. This was a small tree, about 8ft tall.

Disease pathogens can gain entry into a plant all kinds of ways. This may have started as an insect hole, or a bad pruning job, or breakage, or a zillion other ways. Physical injuries are so common, but we either forget what they mean to trees, or we are simply ignorant of what can happen.

No pruning and no breakage... it started out as what looked like "woodpecker holes" (which is why I'm thinking a bug of some sort bored into it) and then it seemed to explode from the inside out, by busting open.
