Transplant Redbud tree?

Posted by lane5 VA (My Page) on

I have two redbud trees in my yard that I'd like to transplant to our new house. One is around 5' tall, and the other maybe 6' tall. Before I start digging into the ground an potentially destroy one or both trees, what can I expect the root structure to be like? Is this too large to try to transplant? Any advice on moving the tree and preserving the roots/moisture? Take as much soil as I can?

Thanks.

RE: Transplant Redbud tree?

I did it once with one about 4-5 feet tall. It survived fine.

Pays to be careful. It has a significant tap root, so dig deep around it. In my case, the redbud was growing to the west of a big sugar maple, with a fertile garden immediately adjacent to it further west. The tap root, to get moisture and fertility, took a sharp turn to the west, away from the maple and toward the garden, about 2-3 feet down. As a result, because we couldn't see what it was doing, we snapped the tap root off below the turn. Got as much root as we could, transplanted a big ball, and it grew.

Good luck.
