Moss in the woodland garden..

I have an acre of woodland gardens and whenever I have tried to grow moss it dies..!! However, if I go to the trouble of raking and laying down a layer of soil, and then planting grass..Well, within a year or so I have beautiful moss pathways.. My question is one of curiousity --does anyone know why this works, when a di
rect planting of moss will not??

Thanks

It's because the moss thinks that you don't want it there. I've always had the same trouble. I can't grow it and my parents want to get rid of it. Seriously though, it might be that your prep work increases the acidity of the soil, or in some other way make it more hospitable to the moss. I do not really know the West Coast at all, so i can't give you a good answer. Just stick with what works.
