Mulching helps keep roots cool and provide a moist environment for seeds to germinate - and provides a more forgiving environment if you forget to water. Mulching is certainly a good thing to do (although don't over do it!). Some of these plants (like the trillium and bloodroot) go dormant when they are unhappy. If you just "lost" them this year, you might be surprised to see them come back next year.

Most woodland plants like a little mulch and it will help to reduce the numbers of unwanted invaders.

The best mulch for woodland gardens are chopped up leaves from the trees in your yard. I vac/mulch the leaves on the beds and dump them back onto the beds, I do this in the late fall, covering everything. I know this sounds stupid, that is what my DH says, but I'm trying to regenerate the soil which had been bare for years (the wind blows fallen leaves away. This spring more plants came up than I ever expected. It also cut back on some undesirables.

Wild ginger may not wander. The clump will just get bigger and bigger. If you try moving/dividing it you will find you NEVER get it all moved. New babies will be where ever you thought you moved out of, much like Lily's of the Valley.

Oh, okay thanks for the tip, I hope it does ( The wild ginger come clump) came back bigger and better year by year. Today I'm adding The false Solomons seal and Yellow trilliums, Along with Bishops cap.
