These eurasian invaders actually pollinate themselves (kliestogamy) and need no help from pollinators to seed themselves around. They're great little plants, some find them quite desirable, and they certainly won't displace anyone else in the garden. Bet others on this forum would like some too;o)

In NY state I've seen these growing on roadsides (where they withstand annual doses of rock salt each winter), and also in gardens like yours. They do pop-up here and there, but I would hardly consider them invasive in the classic sense. I imagine that if you pull them on a regular basis they won't be hard to control. They also have the capacity to stay underground for several seasons before showing again.

It is interesting to note that this species is also found here in Japan, again as a foreigner! PF

When I gardened in northern Maine, helleborine came up in the flower beds too. I liked it and left it alone. In the few years I was at that place, it never spread around. I wish I could have brought some back to VA with me.
