I grew up calling this an umbrella plant. What is its real name?

Podophyllum peltatum - common name is mayapple. When it is mature (and happy enough), it will send up two leaves and will have a single flower. A native plant that in some areas goes dormant during the hot summer months.

I like 'em and they seem to have survived some invasive attacks here. Don't eat 'em.

The fruit is used to make a drink like lemonade, the roots are collected and sold as a STRONG medicinal. So strong it is considered poison in un-trained hands. The drink made from the fruit only is nice tho.

Fruit is edible, but use caution. Seeds are poisonous.

We moved into our current home two years ago at christmas. The first spring i was surprised at a large area covered by these plants...never knew what they were. so thanks for asking! Mine bloom nicely, as yours do, and I fertilize them once in the spring with Neptune's Harvest Fish/Seaweed fertilizer.

Here is a link that might be useful: Neptune's Harvest fish/Seaweed fertilizer
