Below is a picture of what I'm eventually going to turn into a woodland garden. I need some suggestions on what might work in this area.

The bush near the chain link fence was really a vine which I've already dug out. The bush closest to you is a holly bush. I've already tried planting a rhodie in the corner where the chain link fence is, but it's dying before my eyes. I don't think transplanting it would save it.

During the Fall and early Spring the area gets dappled sun. However, once the tree in the picture puts out leaves the area remains in shade until Fall again.

My first plan is to cover it with wet newspaper and mulch as you all have suggested. I'm currently working on two other beds so I have time for the newspaper and mulch to do their thing.

When I'm ready . . . what should I plant?
