We have about an acre in our front yard that is forest and then four or so acres of fenced pastures beyond that. Part of the forest is very wet and part is very dry. On the fence line the trees have limbs from 30 feet up growing straight down. More near the house has been limbed up in the past. I think I would benefit from cleaning up the fence line. I know this will let more light in, but not sure how much. My question is whether I should do this and assess impact before laying out my plan, or start my plan before doing this. I have a lot of basic ideas, but not sure where to start. I've considered getting a landscape architect but I'm not sure the cost of getting advice, especially for a woodland setting that isn't going to be elaborate.

Any suggestions of where to start. I'm now in VA and not NC
