Understory shrubs can be cut and treated with herbicides.

'Removing' surface roots from 2 acres is another matter. Even if this was feasible, it would severely damage a lot of trees. Besides which, the roots of trees that survive would grow back quickly. At any rate, root control should not really be necessary becuase shade-loving woodland plants like ginseng are adapted to compete with tree roots, as long as the soil is good.

I am actually doing the same thing. Our area isnt quite as big its probably 250x85. I had submitted a question about the same thing and composting in another forum. I found that the most "natural" way to do it is to mow. That way you are leaving some of the underbrush like leaves and things. In our yard we had alot of dangerous items the previous owners had just thrown back there. I have cleared about 1/2 of the area and started planting shade lovers also. The understory shrubs can be cut. I think you will find that when you start the project even though you want it "clear" you will find so much life in there you will leave some. As far as the roots-when you start to plant they should take over and control the roots. Just a funny addition-we found 5 dead christmas trees, an old caulking gun, a grill, boards with nails, various pieces of metal, old gardening edging, budweiser beer caps out the wazoo, an old trowel and alot more!
