flies on my elm tree

Hi, every morning there are hundreds of flies on my elm tree. Do they sleep in there or is this a sign of a problem? As far as I can tell nothing is dead in the tree or around it. Someone suggested that they are just warming up, but its the same thing every day.

Thanks
