| I'm in SW Ohio. Dry, decidious woods. Is it a good thing (native) or bad thing (alien)???
Thanks in advance ...

I think I might have identified it as goldenseal???

Oh definitely Goldenseal, and definitely a wonderful thing! If you're googling it, use the botanical name--Hydrastis canadensis--to get better info, as otherwise you'll probably get mostly stuff on using it. Now rare, but it used to be pretty common and is easy enough to grow. It is so rare now because of being dug up for its medicinal use. PS Please don't anyone add to the problem by digging some too! Unless it is a legitimate plant rescue which some native plant groups organize. I know it's available online; I ordered one bare root a few years ago, and now can dig some out of that patch to put in other areas.

No I won't be digging it up (it's on my property) or selling it. It's a beautiful ground cover and I'm thrilled that it's native so I don't have yet another invasive alien to battle. Thanks for the confirmation!

It is on the protected list of 12 states, but not in Ohio, and is endangered in NC, thus legally you cannot sell it but can grow it, give it away, etc. I have some, and it has thrived here, spreading into a nice ground cover. The bloom is really not much to look at, and the critters get most of the fruit, but the foliage is nice. Enjoy.

If it's good for the critters, than it's good for me :^)
