Woodland herb?

Trying to determine the identity of plant that grows in large numbers under the deciduous canopy here in eastern Kentucky. It has a fringed, vaguely heart-shaped leaf and a green rhizome with a purple center that smells a bit like ginger. Attached are links to photos of the plant and root.

Possibly Bigleaf Aster (Eurybia macrophylla). Eurybia is the new latin name, you may find more information available under the previous name: Aster macrophylla.
