I was recently on a trail in the woods and came across a plant I had never seen before. It was a vine with golf ball size pods hanging from it. The pods where open ended like a wedding bell, they where green, with soft bristles all over it. On the inside of the pod there was two chambers that looked like honeycomb and in each chamber there was a black seed that looked exactly like a watermelon seed. Hope someone can help. Pixilated, your plant sounds like a mayapple (Podophyllum). Some types are mottled early in the season at least.

Are Mayapples still around in August? Here in Ontario it is much too hot and they go dormant by August for the most part. Some in better conditions are able to hang around but for the most part they are all gone. It does sound like Mayapple in a way but I find the best description of an individual Mayapple to be like a miniature palm tree.
