Wood chips

Having a few tree stumps removed and would like to use some of the smaller pieces for landscaping...(mountain ash) . But there is some tree that can't be used for that. Can someone tell me which tree is not suitable? Seems like it kills growth around it. Thanks so much for your help. BT
