Lilly of the Valley...thinning?

zucchini

I have hundreds of lilly of the valley, I suspect they are chocking each other! They are all in a long row perhaps 4 feet wide, some Iris mixed in and another tall growing red flowering plant (name forgotten for now)..What I notice this fall is that they are turning very black, perhaps this is normal, but I don't remember them looking this sad in the fall. In the past I have thinned a few out, not easy with their deep winding roots, but should I thin them? or ?

thanks for info, I would hate loosing them..Martha/zucchini
