I was wondering if anyone else in their woodland areas have Plants from the Prenanthes group. Common names Gall of the earth, Lions foot , Tall white lettuce or Ratllesnsake root.
The plants have really neat and odd looking leaves before they mature and bear flowers ( Asteraceae family ),Some of them have dark bluish /green leaves . Immature plants will have arrow shapped bottom leaves while others have deeply lobed bottom leaves. They are kind of prehistoric looking when mixed in with my different types of ferns ,Jack in the pulpits ,Trilliums ,May apples etc.Glad I didn't weed them out...they are kind of cool. These grow in Highbanks metropark in Columbus Ohio where I am a wildflower volunteer. Are blooming now. Very interesting plants as you said.

There are four species (at least) of Penanthes that are native in my area. I only grow two plants, that I found on Native Plant rescues, both have unusually shaped leaves and could be hybrids. One has produced seedlings, the other has not, during the several years i've had it.
They do not seem to be invasive here, as you seldom find more than a few plants in an area, often only a single plant, usually at woods-edge or along roadsides.

Rb, haven't checked the thread lately, sorry...I have the first plant( if you can believe the different articles )Prenanthes altissima :where the flowers have five little parts or bracts..common name tall white lettuce and the second plant is Prenanthes trifoliolata with its common name Gall of the earth or tall rattlesnake root..they are both very similar...and boy its a real job out there , trying to separate the the little differences...but wow they do have some really weird leaves...I can try and post a type or two..or send you some pictures ( via E-mail )and you can let me know if you have any similar looking leaves...thanks for getting back to me
