I have made progress!

I posted a week or two ago about a woodland garden that I am trying to create. This site has inspired me and I have made some progress. The woodpiles that were rotting I chipped up and am going to use it as mulch and to enrich the soil. I began placing rocks along where I imagine beds will be. I also planted four trees that I got a screaming deal on (a garden center near my home went out of business). My dad brought over a few ferns they wanted to get rid of and those have been planted as well. However, the biggest progress was the burning of two huge debris piles. There was a lot great compost in these piles, but some of it was going to take years to decompose. I burned a ton and even threw on some of the ivy that we killed over the summer. I am amazed at the difference this has made. I bagged up some of the garbage that was under the debris and began to rake up blackberry canes into piles. I found more great big boulders and I think under the ivy I may have a "stream" of boulders. I am excited to keep working and may even call into work sick while the weather is nice to get another day in.

A word of warning. You were very lucky this time. Do not burn poison ivy. The oils will disburse in the smoke and can be inhaled causing a major problem in the lungs.

I believe the original poster was referring to English ivy, not poison ivy.

homersgarden, this is great progress you have made. And you have already discovered how wonderful it is to "find" things within the jungle. Sounds like it's going to be a wonderful place!

Excellent! It's amazing that so much work can be so much fun but it is. I also like making use of found materials. There is something very satisfying about it.
FYI, a few debris piles are good wildlife shelter so don't feel the need to tidy up every last one if you have the space.
