As i walked to work this morning i enjoyed the crisp air, the frost on the grass, the sunshine, and the colorful leaves. One tree, that hadn't changed color, was 'dripping' leaves. Awesome. I just stood and watched. But the time clock moves on. I began to wonder: why do some trees turn gorgeous reds and oranges while others just turn brown. Browns are nice, but not especially in leaves. :) There's something 'fun' about walking thru leaves. I wonder what it is? Does anyone know the answer to the leaf color question? Thanks.

Here is a web address for a short article on the subject: http://www.esf.edu/pubprog/brochure/leaves/leaves.htm Short version: green color is caused by chlorophyll. When the chlorophyll takes its winter vacation the green color exits the leaves and the other pigments that are there can then be seen.

And some plant species are not genetically programmed for those other pigments.
