How do you keep paths from getting overgrown?

We were thrilled to buy five acres of woods behind our house. The old owners had used four wheelers to keep up the paths, but we don't own one (nor want to) and we don't walk them enough to keep them clear. Does anyone have any other suggestions for keeping down the weeds? Thanks in advance. Eileen

A heavy layer of mulch. Some folks have even used old carpet (which will be covered with leaves after the first season). You can probably get used carpet from flooring companies.

I have 5 acres with 4 or 5 walking trails that are about 2 feet wide I just bring hand clippers with me and cut away a few small branches here and there, once every few weeks. For the weeds my daughters and I each carry a stick and beat them down as we walk, it goes really fast.

We have many acres of trails and we use a riding lawn mower also.
