Black Gum (Tupelo) and soil pH
| | |
Posted by amyjean 5 (My Page) on Fri, Oct 6, 06 at 14:52
I would like to plant a Black Gum, but my soil pH is 7.1. Everything I've read on this tree suggests that it needs an acidic soil. Am I way off in trying to plant this? (The fall foliage is SPECTACULAR!)
Thank you in advance,

| Mine seem to be doing fine and my soil is very alkaline (Indiana limestone stuff). They are only about 10-12 years old, but they're doing great. |

| Around here they are mostly found on acid soils, but they also grow on limestone soils. I don't think they're picky about soil. |

Catherinet and Ladyslppr -thank you both for your prompt responses! Now, one more question, please: Do your trees turn a beautiful color in autumn? Kindly, Amy |

| Yes. But I think trees tend to be less colorful sometimes when they're young, and look better as they age. (just like humans, hopefully!) |

My soil is acidic, blackgum grows well here as does white oak, redoak, sweetgum, cherry, dogwood,if that helps any and yes it does have a beautiful scarlet color. If you can look toward the sun through the leaves the color is out of this world. oakleif |
