The only general publication that I am aware of, that has a section on forcing perennials, is one by Dr. Perry of UVM. (link below).
Some plant species, such as Hostas, require an obligate cold stratification period(35-40°F, 350Hrs) and then an increase in temperature(>60°F) & photoperiod(day length) to produce foliage and flowers.(16-20 hrs./day under cool-white fluorescent lighting). Probably less under full-spectrum grow lights.
Heuchera cold stratification is indeterminate(may or may not be obligate, depending upon species).
Hardy deciduous Ferns generally will respond to frost free growing conditions and an increase in photoperiod.
