How much is my destroyed oak worth?

Posted by lori239 8 (My Page) on

A developer who was clearing trees next to my property destroyed one of my red oak trees. The tree was approximately 100 years old and cannot be replaced - we are devastated. We do expect some type of compensation, but how do you put a price on an old oak tree? Does anyone know how to find out what a tree is worth and what we should ask for? Thanks very much.

Insurance companies might have standardized values for these sorts of things. Just a thought.

There is an estimate of value system for trees like this, it includes a point scale for aesthetics, species, age, size, shade, location... the points are added up and a value is determined. These estimates to be valid for insurance purposes need to be prepared by a licensed arborist. Check your yellow pages... another place to check is the local park district for a reference.

If it hasn't already been chipped & trucked off, look into the woodworkers community -- if it has interesting grain it will be valuable as wood! Sometimes very valuable.
