I would suggest looking through some of the back issues and contacting previous authors for their advice on this specific magazine.

Good luck plantmonkey. I've pitched a handful of stories to Cdn Gardener over the years, and never got so much as an email in reply. And since I'm an established garden writer for two or three provincial mags, I find that lack of response rather odd.

Strachan13 I agree, that is rather odd. I guess I usually expect at least a rejection email. I've never pitched this mag so who knows. Maybe I'll try Gardenwise first. I'll let you know what kind of rejection I get;)

Did you email them or send a proper query letter? I got no response from them on email proposals until I sent something through the mail, and then I got a response in short order.
I've had a fair bit published in magazine and newspaper media as well as having a couple of gardening books published so the lack of acknowledgement is a crappy process on their end in my opinion, and not a deliberate snubbing.
Their guidelines do not say what they require or prefer in this way. They should be clearer on their website. They should also say who should receive the query. Try an associate editor rather than the main editor.
Sending a CD with example images goes a long way, especially if you are proposing a profile of a garden - send that with your query letter, and a brief resume of who you are as a writer.
They propbaby will use their own photographer anyway, but providing images give them a better idea of what you are proposing, and probably gets more attention than a plain letter.
