Comments (9)You have at mimimum tip blight happening and obviously some sort of a 'black-fungus'. I don't know why liquid copper isn't an option for you, however. It's what I use on everything outdoors except in my greenhouse I use a combination fungicide/algaecide called Consan20. I guess you know enough about pesticides since you said copper is out of the equation. You (may/might) look at the label for see if Thuja/Arborvitae is listed for use of liquid sulfur. It's a step beyond copper. I really don't have experience with anything more than I've listed, however, I have a lot of spraying experience with copper and sulfur for flowering and fruiting trees...I worked for an organic tree service some years ago........ Comments (3)I'd plant it in it's own pot. It might be just growing on sugars or whatever from the pod it was in. The roots seem ok. I've had several seeds that that stuff was growing on and it didn't spread to the plant/sprout. When mine had that, the little hairs got round spore pods on the ends of the hairs then turned gray. See if a drip of 3% Peroxide kills it or a weak bleach solution- 3 parts bleach-2 parts water. Chamomile tea(weak) is supposed to kill some of that stuff too....See MoreBlack fungus Cast iron plant..
Comments (5)My first guess would be black sooty mold. I'm gardening in Charleston, too, and I sometimes see scale on the leaves of castiron plant cause serious black sooty mold. If you don't observe any scale or other insects on the cast iron, check the plants directly above. The honeydew these sucking insects drop can really make a messy culture for the BSM. Cast Iron is pretty darn tough so you have several options. If the insects are on the cast iron leaves, you can spray them with some horticultural oil on them afer remooving most of the BSM w/ a jet of soapy water. Wait until the temps aren't expected to drop below 40 dgrees for a few days before the oil treatment to avoid damaging the plants. Another option, especially if it is a major infestation, is to cut all or most of the leaves off and wait until spring for them to put out new foliage. Then spray again in March-April with hort oil to get any of the insects that survived the winter. Cast Iron plant's roots/rhizomes are tough enough to survive a major pruning. If the source of the honeydew is from another infected plant, spray the CIP w/ a jet of soapy water to remove the BSM and the other plant w/ the same oil treatment as explained above. Comments (7)Vinegar won't do it, instead use a mixture of water, bleach and some clothes washing detergent sprayed on with a hand pump sprayer (about $12), leave it on for a few minutes, then scrub with a brush on a long pole, and rinse well with water. I would mix 3 quarts warm to hot water, 1 quart bleach, and maybe 1/3 cup Tide or whatever clothing detergent you use. You can cover the grass with plastic if you want, but I don't and have never had a problem. This solution won't change the color of the siding, but if the mold is as bad as it sounds, you may already have some permanent discoloration. You will need a ladder because the hand sprayer doesn't shoot the solution very far. Adding 2/3 cup of TSP to the above solution would also help. This solution is still a lot cheaper than the ready made stuff you buy in a hardware store. At a minimum, water and bleach will work....See Morejjjinsa_aol_com
