Grass in the shade?
| | |
Posted by chessergang Mississippi (My Page) on Wed, Jun 21, 06 at 8:50
Good Morning! I live in Southern Mississippi and we have several large Oak trees in our front yard and have a very hard time getting grass to grow due to all of the shade.
Is there any kind of grass (or other ground cover) that will grow nicely under oak trees like that? The weeds don't seem to have a problem, but grass sure does!
Thanks,
Cherie in Mississippi |

| Dear Cherie, Thank you very much for the inquiry. The tree shade you have described is very challenging as warm season grasses generally do not tolerate heavy shade. The best shade grass is probably zoysiagrass. It can be difficult to establish and in this situation the best bet may be sodding. I would think a ground cover would be your best bet. Let a local garden store give you some suggestions so that you get an appropriate, noninvasive species for your area. Again thanks for the inquiry. Respectfully, Trey Rogers The Yard Doctor |

| My husband and I just purchased a house. The only problem is that the front yard doesn't have any grass. The ground is really hard and there is not as much sunlight. What can we do to grow grass? Please Help! |
