Ivy on Maple Trees

I have English Ivy growing on two maple trees. Although it is pretty people keep telling me I need to get rid of it or it will kill my trees.

Do I need to get rid of it, if yes how do I go about it? Thanks!

Thank you very much for your inquiry. I am no expert on trees, but I know a few. So, I went to Susan Gruber and below is her response. It is very through and should help.

The short answer is "not to worry". The ivy will root into the bark but will not penetrate. It is not parasitic and will cause no direct damage to the tree. There are trees covered in ivy in some of the finest gardens in the world, and many have supported the vines for decades. If the tree is mature with thick bark I would keep the ivy and enjoy the beautiful effect. Just keep the ivy from covering smaller branches and leaves.
Now for the long answer. The roots will compete with the tree for nutrients and water, so be sure the tree has adequate amounts of each (again, if it is a mature tree and shows no signs of stress, these inputs may not be needed). Another concern would be that the ground cover often provides a home for voles who may knaw at the bark (at ground level). I have seen a multitude of young (under 8" diameter) trees die this way; most were just surrounded, not covered by the ivy. Finally, the ivy could mask the signs of borers and cankers...again, mainly a concern for younger plants.
Remove the ivy, if desired, by pruning the base of the stems and prying the ivy off. If the bark is being damaged in this process it may be best to let the vines dry up for a couple weeks before ripping. Herbicides can also be used on the ivy around the tree. A 25% solution of glyphosate can be applied to cut stems, OR in the words of the estimable Mr. Calhoun " try triclopyr" - a 4% solution.

I am looking to exchange plant cuttings for propagation. I have cuttings from ivy, butterfly bush, a pear tree, blueberry bush, azalea (white and pink), small cuttings from rosemary, lavender, mint, Pink Chinese Loropetalum, and I just successfully rooted a pinnapple that I am willing to trade.. sorry to be so slow in replying, but found this at the link below. Vines that climb up trees slowly kill the tree from the base upwards by enveloping branches and twigs, blocking sunlight, causing branch and eventual tree death. The added weight of vines also makes trees susceptible to blowing over during storms. English ivy has been confirmed as a reservoir for bacterial leaf scorch (Xylella fastidiosa), a harmful plant pathogen that affects a wide variety of native and ornamental trees such as elms, oaks and maples. I have seen ivy on trees and thought it looked nice, but I guess if left to grow for too long of a period, that it would be very detrimental to a tree. I've seen first hand that wild grape vines, Japanese honeysuckle, and even the native trumpet vine (Campsis radicans) have managed to kill large trees. norways also tend to have surface roots.. down thru the decades.. and with their very dense canopies ... might cause nothing to be grown under them ... including potential inability to grow grass .. keep in mind... i am talking 20 to 40 years from now ... also keep in mind.. you can always plan on removal ... somewhere down the line ... my usual deadline was the season i could take it down for free ... as my drop dead decision season ... my favorite trick.. is to google up the latin name ... and then read up. AND .. flip to google images ... to SEE ... the future ... your reliance on common names ... is part of what is holding you back.. to get good info ... ken PS ALL trees can split on the sun side in winter.. its more a function of proper planting .. and proper after care ... and maybe some winter protection for the first few years.. rather than a trait of a given tree ... in other words.. its a stress reaction ...
