weedy, lumpy lawn needs a lot of help!

Most of my 1.5 acre "lawn" is nothing more than a field that I have been mowing for the three years I've been in this house. It has very little grass and a lot of weeds including thistles and burdock.

My wife does not like the idea of chemicals and herbicides being spread on the lawn as we have two small children. Do I have any options to help me grow some real grass and get rid of the weeds? How safe are the "weed and feed" applications you see at the store?

It is also quite lumpy, making it difficult to mow, and should be rolled.I've read that this can prevent grass from being established as it compacts the soil toomuch. Is there a happy medium I can find?
