Weeds and bare spots

Posted by mikeinmo Z6 MO (My Page) on

I have had pretty good luck eliminating weeds and filling in bare spots in my back yard, but my front and sides are giving me trouble. I have lots of chickweed, clover and other misc weeds (hardly any dandelions) plus some bare spots. Since it is too late to seed in MO, should I concentrate on getting rid of the weeds first, then re seed in the fall? How about fertilizing? Should I fertilize while trying to get rid of the weeds?

TIA
Mike

RE: Weeds and bare spots

Dear Mike in Mo,

Thank you very much for your inquiry. For tougher weeds like Chickweed, you need to use a product that contains triclopyr. One example is Ortho Chickweed, Clover and Oxalis killer. One thing about these weeds is that they tend to proliferate in areas under fertilized, so I would recommend fertilizing to promote turf growth. You can always do this after applying a herbicide, as you want the grass to fill in behind the void left by the dying weed. One thing to be aware of is anything confounding your situation in the side or front yard (shade, tree root competition) and be ready to take this into account when attacking your weed issues.

Again, thanks for the question and let me know if you have more.

Respectfully
