I used to live off of Aviation Blvd in Hawthorne. Wish I knew then what I know now. I would have bought every house on the block. My fertilizer recommendation would be ordinary corn meal bought at a feed store, but I realize you are more synthetic oriented. If you were thinking of a chemical fertilizer, I can't help you with names. You can probably use anything that does not say "Weed and feed" but does say "Safe for St Augustine." Weed and feed is a general no-no around here (you didn't ask so I won't get into it). Just buy a St Aug-safe granular fertilizer and you should be okay. If you are interested in an easy, effective, and inexpensive organic program, go to the Organic Gardening forum, find the FAQ, and look for the one on Organic Lawn Care. If you keep the turf irrigated (no more than once a week, but deeply each time) and mowed at your mower's highest setting, your St Augustine will crowd out almost all the grasses and weeds. It will have trouble with clovers, dichondra, dollar weed, oxalis, and some other broadleafed weeds. Those will have to be spot sprayed or hand pulled as soon as you see them. If you pick a spray, be sure it is safe for St Aug. St Augustine should grow and fill a 10 food diameter area each season. A few strategically placed flats of sod should cover a lawn in one season. Most growth is in the spring where it gets summer heat, but 3 miles from the Pacific is pretty mild. You may get growth all summer.

I was thinking the same thing. You can't get rid of bermudagrass without killing the St. Augustine. The good news is the St. Augustine stolons grow a half inch a day in the summer. So killing the yard and starting over wouldn't take long. You say the front yard is nearly perfect so in the perfect areas use some of your yard as a nursery and plug the back. The front will recover quickly and the back will soon be looking as good as the front. The key is using the top labeled amount which could range from 3 to 5 ounces per gallon. Then to use it as soon as you can then in about 2 weeks. You should have pretty much wiped out the back lawn. I would then cut the grass as low as possible then plug all you can. Keep it well moist and then wait. I would think by the end of next year you should have a solid back yard. Good luck.

The only things growing right now are....1)some evergreen green bushes directly against the front of the house. 2)a butterfly bush right side of the house out front. I guess that would be southeast directionally, however it doesnt seem to be doing well but I'm a novice so I dont really know what "doing well" is. 3)and some sort of tree that turns bright red in the fall...it's located directly against the house's front-left side, southwest I think. That looks good to me, no brown spots or shedding leaves.

I have a large area prone to erosion under a huge Arizona ash, under which is complete shade. I needed something to fill in fairly quickly. I've got Kimberly Queen Fern (I think that's it). It borders on invasive the second year, but I need it to be there. It doesn't mind a little standing water, loves the shade, and just leaving the leaves there to rot works just fine as far as feeding it. If we go through a long dry spell, I water a little bit (I run a sprinkler for a hour every other week), but that's it. It's not that hard to control, either--just dig up or pull. I got mine pulled up from a friend's garden, not even in dirt and in a five gallon bucket that sat out for two days. I put down twenty five "plugs" and now I'd estimate the crowd at about 150 ferns. I've also had what I think is called mondo grass under there. It's the common variety, came with the house (I don't care for it, so I pulled most of it up.), but was thick and lush and happy. In the shade, it's very dark, almost black. Caladiums are fun in shade, but I have to either dig them up or replant every year, as they rot down here in 9. My other ground cover is an undesirable....Indian strawberry...I swear that stuff will take over the world.
