Voles & little moths

How do you get rid of (what I was told) voles? They make tunnels near the surface of my mulch & lawn, and I was also told that they eat the roots of certain shrubs. I never see them though! Also those little moths that flutter in and out of the grass. I just applied Scotts Summergard hoping that it will kill them. Is there something better to use? Any info and/or suggestion would be appreciated. TIA, Paul (Rockland Cty, NY)

Hi Paul, I'll want to hear what's recommended, too, because I've got the same problem in my perennial bed, but just bought some glue traps to tuck under the foliage near the tunneling, as soon as the weather dries out. I think the voles are mostly nocturnal and do emerge once it's dark, but like you, I've not seen them active, ever. Just have the hollow spots under my flowers and sections of the yard near the beds where the dirt's soft and easy for them to dig. Hope there's a solution for them (and the moths, for you).

Dear Paul,

Thank you very much for the inquiry. I am wondering if we are not talking about moles. Your description of them seems more likely than voles. The best way to get rid of moles is through trapping. I Like the harpoon type traps the best and suggest that you really only need 1-2 to effectively do the job. For best results, set them correctly and check them everyday.

As for the moths, there are many species, most of which are a nuisance at best. They have a short life cycle inmost cases. The Scotts product is as good as any.

I always get them mixed up. Is it voles that eat plant roots or moles? One of them only eats the grubs in the soil and therefore is not as much of a problem. We have one of those little tunnel diggers here too. In our clay soil it's amazing anything can tunnel in it. Whatever it is, it doesn't eat the roots of the plants, but I worry about its tunnels interfering with bulbs over winter..... Whatever animal you have that got rid of your pest problem I hope returns for you I think - although rabies they say is pretty bad this year and Coons get rabies......Maryl

Cabbage whites always have some black markings. You could possibly have the native Margined White, closely related. The summer forms are all white with no black markings. The caterpillars of the margined white eat crucifers. You would have to be near an undeveloped area to have these in the city. Otherwise, look more closely for black markings. The cabbage white caterpillar also feeds on nasturtium.

Anygreen, thanks for your response. I may have to resort to that, but it will be my last choice. I raise butterflies and moths (not THIS moth, but Sphinx species), and I don't want to risk it. That leads me to think of the effect it could have on the night-flying sphinx. I may have to stop growing the Salvias most affected. Anyway, thanks so much! Susan
