weeds in canna flower bed

how do i get rid of weeds in my canna flower bed? we dug them up in fall. sprayed the area with round up tilled the grass and weeds and sprayed the area with round up again. then we replanted the cannas and the grass and weeds are back again. not sure what i can use and not get it on the cannas. any suggestions? i really dont want to dig them up again if i dont have to. thanks vicki

Thank you very much for your inquiry. I asked my garden expert Susan Gruber for a little help on this one. See her response below.

At this point the best approach would be to use a wick applicator (i.e. a small paint brush) and some Round-Up. Paint the weeds carefully and avoid the cannas. For the grassy weeds you should be able to use Ortho Garden Grass-Be-Gone, which will not hurt most ornamental plants. I have used it many times in my garden with excellent results and no injury, though I have not tried it near cannas. Otherwise I am afraid you are stuck hand pulling the weeds.

can you spray the grass-b-gone on the grass or do you paint that on like you suggested with the round up? thanks for the help. i really dont want to have to dig them up and try again. they dried out before i could plant them and i lost half of them by doing it his way. thanks again

Plant canna bulbs at a fairly shallow depth. I'm sure there are lots of opinions on this, but for me, about an inch of soil above the rhyzome works. As for you, just plant the rhyzome at the correct depth. There are buds on the rhyzome that will eventually turn into plant stems. Keep those underground with the rest of the rhyzome. Now obviously, if the bud has grown and created a small stem, then by all means, have the vertical stem coming out of the ground. In the end, just make sure the entire rhyzome is under ground. Great plant the canna. Even if you mis-plant it. Chances are it will grow just fine.

Possibly classified as a weed in Australia. They're native to somewhere. C. indica is native in southeast USA. IDK what kind yours might be, besides lovely!

Thanks. Guess I'll just let it be through the winter and see what happens in the spring. It's been growing since Feb/March ish with no flowers. Other coreopsis in that bed bloom and reseed with abandon. They bloomed like crazy, went to seed and died back months ago but these haven't done anything. It doesn't bother me to let them be for now. I just didn't want something that was definitely and invasive weed and take over the bed.
