Hard to say. They spread by runners and if its anything like creeping charlie its hard to know where its about to come up. If you want to go non toxic try a product like Burn Out II which is vinegar, lemon juice and clove oil or an herbicidal soap. Both work by degrading the leaf surface, albeit from different ends of the pH scale. Doubtful that one app will kill it but if you apply and overseed often enough it'll give up the ghost eventually. Lightly apply though because both are non selective. Fire is awesome but such a small margin for error.....

Yup. Looks like a seedling or shoot of some woody plant. The rest are the strawberries - or not since I wasn't sure as to what they were. I would have liked to see a closer picture or a different angle. FataMorgana

I agree with Jeanne. Note on her link that the flowers are yellow, not white. You can tell the difference in leaves (at least between Duchesnea and F. virginiana, which is what I am familiar with) after plenty of exposure (which I unfortunately have). The Duchesnea survives and thrives as a lawn weed; I don't believe Fragaria does (not in my yard, yet, anyway). And now I know how to confirm ID from the fruit (besides eating it)--Duchesnea has those 3-toothed bracts surrounding the sepals that you can see clearly in your picture; F. vesca does not. BTW, I have seen Duchesnea misidentified as Fragaria on quite a few lawn weed websites.

I planted a few Fragaria virginiana in different parts of my yard about 12 years ago. For the first 4 years, they spread like crazy but I never saw any fruit-a few flowers but no fruit. Somewhere along the line I planted some cultivated strawberries--they were a failure because I had no time to do a good job on my garden, but I noticed the next year I started getting fruit on my wild strawberries. The thought crossed my mind that the plants I bought (which were I am sure clones) may have needed a little cross pollination. Or it may have been coincidence and it was just that they needed that long to settle in and fruit. Anyway, they seem to bear a little better every year, but we are still not talking any more than snacks. But boy, does it make weeding more enjoyable when you find a few strawberries as your reward!
