Best type of mulch to use for seeding a new lawn

Yard Doctor,

What is the best type of mulch to use when planting a new lawn? I've tried straw but it can be annoying and bunches up due to the wind. Is peat moss or some type of compost a good alternative? It seem like it would take a lot of work to spread this evenly. I know some people prefer not to use anything. I guess the time of year and amount of rain may be factors in what to use.

Dear Eddie,

Thank you very much for your inquiry. Mulching helps if you do not have readily available irrigation, sloped ground, or germination conditions that are suboptimal.

Appropriate mulches are straw and paper mulches. Avoid peat and composts with lots of peat as they will hold too much moisture.

Straw is as effective as any, but any windy conditions are challenging if the straw is not wet. String spaced 4-6 feet apart and criss-crossed will hold down the mulch.

A good paper mulch to use is called PennMulch (there are others that are good as well). Do not spread it on too heavily. It can put down dry, and then it will expand during watering.

Would mushroom compost be an effective mulch? It doesn't seem to be too dense so air and water should travel easily through it and I would think the grass would be able to easily grow through it. I'm not sure how effective it would be at holding moisture. My interest in mushroom compost is that if can act as mulch and also provide organic material to the lawn then I can kill two birds with one stone.

I'm definitely not the person to ask for Georgia lawns, nor anything with Bermuda. Just sayin'. Just post-building, with immature trees in the back, anything will do well. Assuming those trees eventually throw large canopies and overshadow the back, you're kind of sunk. I'm assuming that not a lot of sun means less than four hours per day. Please correct if that's not going to be right. :-) Bermuda doesn't seem to do well in deep shade from the posts of others, but neither does fescue in my more-northern experience. It doesn't matter which you choose as both will eventually look bad. Add in the fact that trees also compete for the water and nutrients and you can forget a really nice lawn. Your mileage may differ down there, so I hope there's a southern lawn expert hanging around. January doesn't feature a lot of action around here.

Centipede does well up in our neck of the woods -- provided you have our typical Acid red clay full of rocks and deficient of any and all nutrients..... It needs acid soil... Certainly, add no lime... My friends tell me that Centipede can be a bear to initially get sprouted... I have a few friends who started it from seed... 2 gave up and some of it started growing 3 months later.. 1 watered 3x every day... He said it took about 30 days to sprout for him. Then, I know 2 other people who plugged it -- and they said it worked *VERY* well. In the end, all of them recommended Sod if you really want a Centipede yard now... The literature on Centipede I have read says it is wonderfully suited to our area *except* drought tolerance... that it isn't particularly drought tolerant... especially vs Bermuda (Which is the KING of drought resistance).. But... I do think Centipede is a great choice -- especially if you are looking for more or less 100% green something that likes being mowed short that you can feed a giant quantity of benign neglect.... Because... Benign Neglect = Healthy Centipede grass! I don't know anyone who has succeeded at keeping a 100% pure Centipede lawn -- Partially because it doesn't like shade, but mainly because it is slower growing and the weeds invade and other grasses invade and Bermuda invades... On the up side -- all that stuff is green and looks nice and tidy when you mow it short.. Thanks John

>>seeds will not germinate if any type of weed control has been added. Well, not reliably, and even if they do, some gets taken out by the herbicide. One thing you can try is a soil flush--water a lot more than you normally would to drive the herbicide down into the soil profile. Don't allow runoff or extreme puddling, but small puddles that are temporary are fine. Fortunately, complete failure from an herbicide is rare (although there are a few I can think of that would cause almost complete failure), but it's definitely going to have an impact on how much seed sprouts.

Funny thing about that Mimosa-my folks had lived in Fort Myers for twenty years when, upon visiting them, I pointed out this neat, puffy-looking flower growing in the turf on some hell-strip by a mall. They had never seen it! I saw it my first day down there! I guess it's safe to say, the world is composed of two types of people, those who notice plants and those who don't. To wit, if you'll allow me to take this slightly further OT- a botany professor who writes a good blog was writing about his first-day students. He would show them a photo of some scene in a forest somewhere, tropical or otherwise, and ask them to write down what they saw in the picture. Almost to a student, if there was some kind of animal in the picture, it got written down. Nobody....not one student....took note of all the plant life in the photo! And this was a botany class. Sheesh..........I don't hold out a lot of hope for our future. In any case, sunshine mimosa is one of those subtropical plants that, when I'm down in FL I like to look at and conjure up the dream of using it in the north here as an annual. Not saying that would work, or that I'm going to be doing it, but just that it always makes me think about doing so. +oM

Dear Eddie,

Thank you very much for your inquiry. Compost can be a nice addition to a lawn. For my money and time, I would get the grass germinated and then add the compost after 30-60 days. If it is a new lawn and it can be thoroughly mixed with topsoil, that is a different story.
