That is really nice. I can't imagine why people want to kill bees. I'd do the same thing you did. I think they'll like those flowers. Thank you! I spent some time reading up on solitary bees which I never knew existed. It's a bit daunting to think they will emerge next year in greater numbers, probably in the same garden bed they have selected this year. I see many bees all around the property where we have fruit trees and lots of flowering plants. There's no sign of a colony or hive, so perhaps they are all solitary. Who knew? Cheryl

I never got close enough to get a good look at them. I can say they didn't look anything like a bumble bee. More on the wasp end. They were kinda long instead of round. They were not dirt dobbers. I did go investigate the nest though. I noticed they went in when it rained. It was a light rain so I continued working but they disapeared for the rest of the evening.I took from this that they don';t like wet. All the yard has plenty of grass except that one spot. It is sandy and round shaped. pencil size wholes all over the place there.No ant hill like patterns. A friend was helping build our chicken coop and he walked right in the middle of the nest with them swarming. He said they were ground bees and would sting when we mowed( his mouth ain't a prayer book though so who knows) but we decided to just not mow there. They didn't even attempt to sting him. I live in North Florida. Bout 2 hours from Georgia. Thanks for the interest. I'd really like to know more. In fact I joined a Bee site the other day but it is about honey bees. Not much help in this case.

I'd like to reiterate that ground-nesting BEES are creatures you almost always want to preserve. Many are native and under stress already, and many are more effective and important pollinators than honeybees, especially for plants like tomatoes which have hard-to-access pollen and no nectar to offer. Most are not social or are only semisocial in small family groups, so they are non-aggressive, pleasant in temperament and very easy to coexist with. I actually take great pains to attract native bees and keep them fed during the parts of the year when they are active but my veggies aren't blooming yet. A lot of wasps as well are beneficial predators that pose little risk to humans as long as they're left alone. But yellowjackets or other aggressive, ill-tempered wasps that form large nests in/near homes and areas heavily trafficked by humans can be dangerous. I would probably call a professional to deal with large/busy nests of such wasps, personally.
