Clay / Bentonite Soil

borninsnow

I live in the Steamboat vicinity with heavy clay soils. Last summer I had sod installed on my yard. Everything went fine, I watered it regularly, etc. Last fall before the snow fell everything was still green. This spring it did not come back. All my grass is dead. I have slowly been able to re-generate some green spots, but only with extremely heavy watering. The soil underneath seems to be extremely hard, and as though the roots have not set in the topsoil. I was talking with a landscaper from western Nebraska recently and he mentioned bentonite and clay soils and that they can get extremely hard, allowing few things to grow. Does this sound like my problem? Is there any resolution without "starting over" and having different topsoil hauled in? Will frequent aeration do any good? Do you have any suggestions for me?

Sincerely,

Envy for Green
