Bindweed is not a trivial weed to get rid of. His approach may actually work but it would take an entire season to get it all out. Since his is an organic site you may not appreciate this suggestion. It involves RoundUp but you do not spray the entire site. You put some RoundUp (undiluted) into a baby food jar. Then dunk a sprig of bindweed into the RoundUp and leave it there for several days. Supposedly the RoundUp will kill all the roots attached to that one plant. Then move to some apparently healthy bindweed and continue the process. I have only read about this approach. I'm lucky to not have bindweed.

It's way too hot to use 2,4-d. It should only be used when the highs are below 90. It's probably better to be on the safe side and not use it unless the temperatures are below 85. Your best bet at this time of the year is to hand pull, but that's not very feasible if it's 50% of the lawn. Somebody posted a couple of years ago about diluting Roundup to about 1/4 strength, putting it in jars and partially burying the jars with some of the bindweed stuck in the jar. I think he did it in the fall as temperatures were cooling down. The idea is to kill the bindweed slowly enough that it draws the roundup into the roots, killing the entire plant, rather than just the part that's above ground. Since many of the vines that you see above the ground actually belong to one plant, doing this in one spot can cause bindweed to die in many other spots as well.

For years, I've had a truly gorgeous lawn. Due to the drought out here in California, I've cut back on my watering as much as possible, and its taken its toll. While my fescue is suffering, weeds like Oxalis, Bindweed and even Bermuda Grass are thriving in the lawn. When is the best time to fight these invasive weeds? Should I wait until the cooler months of fall or do battle now? Also, is there a product that will deal with all three, or do I have to tackle them one at a time? Any suggestions on what to use? I've heard that Ortho Weed B Gon works well on Oxalis. Anyone have experience with this stuff?

My whole life I have hated bind weed. But now, I would really like to grow it as a ground cover to replace my lawns. I love how thick it grows, how it feels on my bare feet. I love the flowers. I love how fast it spreads. I love that the only known things that can kill it are intense nuclear radiation or Round-Up. It stays low to the ground. It doesn't require water, or mowing. It's beautiful. There is nothing NOT to love about bind weed..... except that it is uncontrollable, kills all other plant life in it's path and it can't be killed without a lot of Round-Up or hard to get nuclear materials. My neighbors would hate me. Oh but I wish.
