Fertilizing with 10-10-10

I talked to a person that had a beautiful lawn the other day and asked what he used. He told me he used the cheap stuff from Home Depot. It is 10-10-10. He said I can put down as heavy as I want every 8 weeks. He said that was all he did and has beautiful grass. Is this fertilizer any different than the 4 step I'm on now? It is defenitely cheaper, but if it works I would love to try it.

Thank you very much for your inquiry. Fertilizer is fertilizer we like to say, it will all work and none will work if you know how (or donÂt) to use them. A product like 10-10-10 can work, but it going to require frequent reapplications, as noted. The biggest plug for some of the turf fertilizers is the combination of nitrogen sources that provide a longer type control. But, if you can go to your lawn every 3-5 weeks with a regulated dose of a soluble nitrogen source then it will work fine.(now you are treating your lawn like the golf course and stadium guys). Please remember that s fertilizer with a highly soluble nitrogen source (like10-10-10) will have burn potential and will need to be watered in and not used when it is really hot and dry outside

How much of 10-10-10 I should use for growing tomatoes and greenbeans.Can I also use it for straweberries etc.? and how often? Thank you

californian you are missing the point of the experiment.. which is to germinate (or not) seeds from the get-go in a pre-mixed soil medium. The experiment shows strong fertilizers in the soil are not conducive to germination. It's a multi-tiered experiment that also is looking at the growth patterns for what does germinate. We're not trying to show the effect of fertilizer AFTER the seeds are germinated, but the effect BEFORE the seeds germinate and then closely watch the results. The fish fertilizer is 5-1-1 and nothing has germinated to date. Instead we got all that mold growth. The other aspect of this experiment is for observation notation in the project. I know what you are saying, but that's not the premise for this particular experiment. We could try reducing the amount of fish fertilizer and 10-10-10 used to see what amount allows germination and then note what kind of growth we see.

Using just Easy Feed won't have any detrimental effect on your roses. Think of you drinking a can of Red Bull once a week for your energy boost. It'll last for an hour or so but then another can would be necessary to maintain the energy. Easy Feed is similar. It shows in the plant's growth. A quick spurt of green and larger leaves is followed by smaller leaves until another dose is applied. Feeding a slower release product results in a steady even growth pattern. A little fertilizer applied often is better than a lot all at once. Organics or slow release chemicals such as Osmocoat release nitrogen at a slow steady rate, while the high nitrogen liquids give a quick shot then are gone.

Yes, the fertilizer recommendation is almost certainly a wild shot in the dark. As bb has already said, get someone there who knows something, or take sample to plant pathology lab if there is one in your area. Do you see any resinous globs of material below any branches that are unhealthy or dead? +oM

While spring-seeded lawns tend to be difficult as they don't have time to develop roots before summer hits, I'm not sure how bad your summers are in Zone 5 WI anyway. Regardless. Because of young grass' sensitivities, I'd go with the Milorganite. It'll also give the grass a sustained and very gentle feeding during the summer, but nothing that'll set off rapid growth or damage the lawn. Plus the iron is always nice. I'm hesitant to recommend 10-10-10 because we don't know if you require the phosphorus and potassium. Not knowing, I'd usually go with a high nitrogen, low everything else fertilizer (like 29-0-5 or so) as a recommendation on mature grass. Your grass isn't mature, so let's not stress it.

I moved into a new home last year with a huge backyard (8,000 sq ft.) it came with no grass. I was told the seller had seeded the yard but I waited and waited. It is now March of 2011 and I desire to have a yard full of grass. I do have that nasty VA clay and I was told to get about 10 bags of lime and lime down the yard until it was gray - over seed and water. I was further instructed to use one bag of 10 10 10 for the entire yard. Will that's all I need for that amount of sq footage? Thanks.
