Grub control -- When?
Comments (6)Sod webworms are caterpillars. You can control them naturally by allowing wasp nests to form under your eaves. These "paper wasps" create nests that are like paper. Inside each cell of the nest they lay an egg and insert a paralyzed caterpillar for the newborn larva to eat. These wasps are magical creatures. As long as you leave them alone, they will quickly learn who you are and your habits and leave you alone. This can take a lot of conditioning on your part so you don't dance around waving your arms when they approach you. Last summer I had a wasp population of about 300 all around my house. They all knew my routine so I could take amazingly close up pictures like this without them paying any attention. That was from about 1.5 inches away, so they really will leave you completely alone. And they will clear your property of all caterpillars. As for grubs, it has been reported that they rarely strike the same neighborhood two years in a row. The time to watch for them is after you notice beetles swarming your porch lights. Make a note of when that is and, about a month later, inspect your lawn. Dig up a full square foot of soil about 2 inches deep. If you find more than a dozen grubs, then you have a problem. Normal lawns should tolerate a dozen grubs per square foot. If you have fewer than that, you should be good for the rest of the year because some will not survive. If you have more, then spray away....See MoreBayer Tree and Shrub Insect Control- When to Apply?
Comments (10)Well, according to the website you can apply it anytime of the year as long as the ground is not frozen or waterlogged but they state fall is the best time for control of aphids. The only fruit/nut trees they have listed as safe to use on are: Apple, Crabapple, Loquat, Mayhew, Oriental Pear, Pear, Pecan and Quince. I don't get how it is safe on those since it moves into every portion of the plant even new growth. So the fruit MUST take up some of the poison? Not sure I'd want it in anything wildlife or myself would ingest. Would not the flowers and nectar also take it up making it toxic to bees? Comments (2)Earthworms are the most favorite food of moles, although they will eat almost any insect including grubs. Nematodes need to be put into your soil when it is warm and moist, like mid June around here and that is really too late for them to be effective for this years crop of grubs. You could put Nematodes into your soil in mid September so the could get to next years crop of grubs. Keeping in mind that gardeners have been trying to eliminate moles since at least the 16th century and the moles are still around there may be little, to nothing, we can do about them except coexist. The only people that are having any real success with mole control are those that sell you products to control them, that really do not work....See MoreMerit 0.5 for lawn grub control?
Comments (1)Any time after you have positively identified a grub problem in your lawn. There's no benefit to applying grubicide to a lawn that has no grubs. You check for grubs that by digging up 1 square foot of turf that seems to be damaged and counting the grubs you find. If you find fewer than a dozen grubs, then grubs did not cause the problem. If you find a slimy mess of grubs too many to count before you throw up, then you have a grub problem....See Moreawschmidt_comcast_net
