Comments (1)I would highly recommend a soil test. OSU does not perform them anymore but recommends you get them from UMASS. I love Milorganite and use it: May1, June15, Aug1, Sept15. End october or early Nov, put down fast acting winterizer (high N). Use pesticides only if needed, not prophylactically. Don't be too hard on any lawn service company this year...really tough summer for any lawn. Comments (2)Earthworms are the most favorite food of moles, although they will eat almost any insect including grubs. Nematodes need to be put into your soil when it is warm and moist, like mid June around here and that is really too late for them to be effective for this years crop of grubs. You could put Nematodes into your soil in mid September so the could get to next years crop of grubs. Keeping in mind that gardeners have been trying to eliminate moles since at least the 16th century and the moles are still around there may be little, to nothing, we can do about them except coexist. The only people that are having any real success with mole control are those that sell you products to control them, that really do not work....See MoreGrubs!
Comments (4)That is a good article newto. Looks like the OP used the wrong product to kill grubs. So he/she should not reapply the wrong one but instead use the right one. Now here's the thing about using insecticides over and over or using them as a prevention against a pest that you don't have yet: one of the major classes of beneficial soil microbes is micro arthropods (insects). When you apply something that kills insects, it kills these invisible insects, too. They're taken out of the ecosystem. Imagine the effect of wiping out all the fish from our ecosystem. Your lawn is a tiny portion of the Earth, so recovery is fairly simple, but be on the watch for signs of stress lingering for months after applying an insecticide. The solution to restore the soil biology is to apply a light dusting of compost followed by organic fertilizer....See MoreGrub Question
Comments (4)The newer Grub-ex1 (if that was used) formulation is very slow in moving through soil and can remain effective for quite a long time. So it could have to do with a dosing issue... or possibly it was too dry in around and after time of application not getting it down to grub depth in time? The older formulation....not as slow. Also if you read up on some univ sites on grub control (michigan state comes to mind?) they have found that many "insect/grub" products are very ineffective against grubs...and also that timing is very important (bags often say very wrong dates). Unfortunately many lawn care companies aren't the best or most knowledgeable when it comes to best practices in disease/problems (or fertilizer timing/types). Their second application should have been something like Bayer 24hr Grub control - otherwise it won't have time to make it down to that soil depth for the kill.
