We had a really rough winter, but for the last two weeks it's been in the 70's and low 80's. I couldn't help but take the mulch and newspaper off and give the mushy stalks some fertilizer. Can anyone tell me if that will hurt? The forecast for the next 10 days is only going to get down in the 60's, so I felt safe taking the mulch and newspaper away. But I'm worried I fertilized it too soon. Also, what kind of fertilizer works best? All I've ever used is Miracle Grow.

The time to fertilize is when the bananas are actively growing. I don't think that you damaged your bananas, but it doesn't really help at this point either. As for fertilizing, this thread may help:
