make sure the shoots are thick so they will have some corm and root already on them. i have had lots of bad experiences with them when they are to small [say 6 inches]

The standing rule around here that I've learned is 1-foot or so and they should have enough of a root system to survive. You can (gingerly) dig around the plant with your fingers and see if it's established, of course. I've found if it feels firm and supported when you gently wiggle the plant from side to side, it is OK to dig out.

Of course, depending on which banana and what your soil is like, YMMV!
