Where you might expect damage is with colored foliage (yellow etc.) forms and with very dwarf ones that may have the root zone heat up too much.

Thanks for the insight bboy...I've learned that small dwarf and miniature conifers do best with afternoon shade here, but always associated it with foliage burning, not realizing the root of the problem might be soil temperature.

Back to rockhaven's question on Pinus parviflora: I have several cultivars that will eventually be weaned from the shadehouse and planted out into the cruel environment called 'my yard'. Are there any smaller growing parviflora's that are know for being able to handle hot sun with low humidity or specific cultivars which do best in shade?

I lost all but three parviflora's during the heat waves of the past two summers. I mean literally everything wiped out. The three remaining are both (2) 'Tenysu-kazu' and a tree form, 'Yatsubusa'. I suspect that 'Yatsubusa' is still alive because of its size, which is ~`meter. Other dwarfs and minis of green and blue color, are toast.

'Yatsubusa' should be the name on a small-growing one.
