It sounds pretty much like canned salsa.

Just google tomato relish. There are many variations on the recipe. Tomatoes, onions, peppers, vinegar are pretty standard starting ingredients but it gets complicated after that. Some use sugar and spices. some use both sweet and hot peppers. Bells , jalapenos,serannos and others. Ther are also green tomato variations. basicly same ingredients except use green tomatoes.

In the south, it's known as "cha-cha" or "chow-chow" relish. It is not the same as salsa.

Thank you for the help! I know it's not salsa - it's smoother in texture, but Farmerdill might be onto what it's called. It's a sweet/hot/tart flavor. It reminds me of a recipe I made years ago for stuffed cabbage, but the sauce was a tomato, brown sugar, and cider vinegar. Very tangy.

I know this will make me remember to save the label or at least write down the name of the item and the name of the maker next time!

Chow Chow is a mixed vegetable relish traditionally made from whatever was available at first frost. Different from tomato relish in that it almost always is based on cabbage and green tomatoes plus peppers vinegar sugar and whatever else is handy

Chow Chow is a good condiment for cow peas and their pot liquor served over corn bread.

Maybe this would work? My Mother made it for years, and I made some last month. It's really good on lots of things: beans, hot dogs, in potato salad, etc.

20 medium green tomatoes
8 large onions
8 large granny smith apples (or green apples, any kind)
2 green peppers (you could certainly put in a hot pepper or two)
Grind all together and drain. (I use food processor.)
Add: 5 c. sugar
3 cups cider vinegar
1 T. black pepper
1 t. Turmeric
1 t. cloves
2T celery seed
2T. mustard seed
2 T. salt
1 t. cinnamon

Bring all to boil and simmer gently for 1 hour.
Pack, seal, and process. Mom used boiling water bath, but I always pressure can. Am afraid of all those non acidic ingredients.
