I was hoping someone would answer this. I always ask the nurseries for them and they say, "If you want one, just buy the tree". Too bad the trees inside are $250-$3000. I guess I will get around to making one someday. The trees I have seen in them came from Oregon the nursery manager told me. I have seen many square ones but the octagonal ones look great with certain cultivars.

I did a simple google search for "wooden planter boxes" and got thousands of hits.

Im trying to send pic of one i built.

I thought they used those wooden boxes as an excuse to up charge some "special" trees for $300-1000. Plus get a delivery fee since those boxed trees have to be heavy. Wouldn't you want to put an expensive tree into the ground anyway so it can grow nice other than waiting for the box to fall apart and the tree to get rootbound?

Thanks Matt, This is what ive been talking about, I think nice planters can be built out of wood. I had a red dragon in this box for about 4 years. It finally outgrew the box and one of my brothers was all to happy to come and get it! The tree in there now is a green mist. The box is cedar, the inside was coated with fiberglass gel coat used for working on boats.....Should last a long long time!

I accidentally posted before I finished typing. Did you use nails to build that or screws? Anyway, it looks great. I may try one myself, any tips?

Hey Matt, The hardest part of building that box was finding some cedar reasonably priced, i would recomend a local saw mill if possible. I used all stainless steel fasteners,with construction adhesive. Ring nails on all of the box area,and small head finish screws on the top "picture frame" for removal purposes. On the inside corners are four 4/4 post, which were probably overkill but made for great nailers. Easy little project,looks good, trees like it! AL
